One of my fellow pilgrims is an archaeologist at UCD, and he remarked around the fire that for his discipline, the concept of landscape would also encapsulate elements such as human use of the landscape, history, crafts and artistic remnants. This chimes with the UNESCO definition of cultural heritage which is seen as "not limited to monuments and collections of objects. It is also comprised of living expressions inherited from our ancestors, such as oral traditions, performing arts, social manners, rituals, festive events, knowledge and practices related to nature and the universe, and knowledge and techniques linked to traditional crafts."

This thinking was further consolidated by watching a 'listening session' courtesy of Flourishing Diversity, who provide opportunities to hear from representatives of various indigenous cultures around the world. The particular session that pricked my interest featured Nemonte Nenquimo, an Indigenous Waorani leader from the Amazon. You can watch the session here. What particularly resonated for me was that Nemonte started the session by singing, which is a key part of Waorani culture, before going onto explain about the relationship between her people and the wider ecosystem (as well as threats to both).

It struck me that song and story were somehow vessels or carriers of the relationship or intertwining of Waorani and Amazon. And that the stewardship of the ecosystem and the people living within it, by necessity must include nurturing the songs and stories that have grown from it. Not for some academic, archival or conservative purposes, but because they are inextricably part of that wider ecosystem, not separate objects that stand or fall. Not knowing the specific songs and stories of that people, I cannot say for certain, but I suspect that as with many indigenous cultures, these include myriad reflections of the ways in which people and wider ecosystem co-exist, details of animals, plants and weather events as colour, as analogy and as characters in their own right.

This is certainly the case with English folk song, which is rich in these ways; what I don't know is whether the Victorian song collectors and others who played a key role in preserving these songs had any inkling of this. There was certainly intent around somehow preserving a glimpse of pre-industrial, more pastoral way of life that was disappearing around them, but whether this was also informed by concern around threats to the ecosystems in which these ways of life existed is not a given. That may be an anachronistic perspective on my part.

Nevertheless, it seems to me that there is explicit ecological benefit in preserving traditional song for greater than artistic reasons. And for me that is because of the wisdom that is implicit in material that shows the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world, and how generations of humans trod more lightly on the earth than we do largely today. If we are to rise to the challenge of climate change, habitat and biodiversity loss, I think there is a key role in not only preserving and sharing this material, but also connecting each other to it, as a conduit for connection to the wider ecosystem, the very cradle of our lives.

If music and songs are only seen as entertainment, or worse, commodities to be traded and made profit from, then we are simply asset-stripping our common inheritance, as much as we are asset stripping our planet. To sing traditional song, therefore becomes, to me, a political, ecological and even a sacred act. A grand claim to end on, but one which I need to explore further...no doubt with a finger in my ear no doubt!

Adam Nobodaddyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09735751781376509326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423093043023594964.post-64268165530437170402022-06-28T12:27:00.006+01:002022-07-01T12:58:15.971+01:00Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
I recently had the immense privilege of participating in one of the Nest Collective's nature pilgrimages, led by folk singer Sam Lee. The outer form of this saw 20 or so pilgrims walk and camp, moving over a couple of days from the village of Rusper in West Sussex (where Vaughan Williams collected the folk song 'The Turtle Dove' in 1907 from the local pub landlord, John Penfold) to Knepp Castle, the flagship Re-wilding project, where a population of critically-endangered turtle doves still breeds each year. The powerful idea that underpins this is that of rewilding both the song, which Vaughan Williams had somewhat 'tamed' with his choral arrangement, and ourselves, through connecting pilgrims, song, landscape and the turtle doves themselves in repeated singing at salient sites along our path. For a deeper dive into the story and concept behind the pilgrimage, you can enjoy a BBC documentary about it here.

For me this was a profound experience, weaving together as it did, my passions for folk music, the natural world and connecting with other people. It also, maybe unsuprisingly as a pilgrimage, included elements of the spiritual or sacred, both formally (an initiating blessing from the vicar of St Mary Magdalene in Rusper) and informally through moments of reflection, silence and and extemporised ritual using our hazel pilgrim's staffs. This aspect may not be everyone's cup of roobois, but for this pilgrim, it was natural and beautifully congruent.

The curation of the experience by Sam and the nurturing of the support team, as well as the other people who scaffolded our route with hospitality and warmth, allowed us pilgrims to connect deeply and immersively with and in the place, and with each other. Though all different in background, preoccupation and intention, we quickly co-created a conscious and caring community; for me this was a timely reminder that both my love of the natural world and the anxiety around threats to it are best shared, as an enhancement of the former and bulwark against the latter. Only connect, indeed.

A few further random observations and realisations from this, that make sense to me, which I offer with no anticipation of being understood:

It has consolidated my long-held feeling that Baba Dioum's assertion that "in the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught" is critical... if we are to rise to the challenge of climate change, habitat loss and threats to biodiversity, this must flow from love, not solely by raising fear, anxiety and dread of the alternative

Artistic and cultural discourse around habitat, landscape, ecosystems and climate change are every bit as important as scientific, political and market responses; in some ways are a precondition for those being effective

Experience, life, existence, consciousness is deeply interconnected and fractal in nature... the notion of 'interbeing' is one that seems somehow to have settled on me recently and I want to explore that further, creatively and personally

Oh brave new world that has such people in it. My faith and hope that humanity can and will evolve consciously and creatively in response to existential threats is stronger as a result of the experience

I have long been unsure about my relationship to Englishness and English folk song in particular, identifying more with my Irish roots, and other traditions. I may have found a way in, and it starts with places and experience, not with material or concepts.

Sleep deprivation and tiredness can yield incredible emotional, spiritual and creative experiences!!

I don't yet know quite how this pilgrimage will leave its mark, personally and creatively but I know it has and will continue to. I look forward to the journey. To my fellow pilgrims, Sam, Carolion, Grant and Josh, our hosts at Rusper, Sedgwick and Knepp, and of course, the turtle doves themselves, thank you and safe travels.

Adam Nobodaddyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09735751781376509326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423093043023594964.post-49029541542176368722020-04-26T20:25:00.003+01:002020-04-26T20:27:19.671+01:00Lockdown dawn chorusBack in the blogging saddle, encouraged by Dunc, and by the opportunity afforded by the situation we find ourselves in with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, to take notice of what's around us.

Lots of people have commented on the volume of birdsong since we entered the period of restriction of human activity. I'm told that the perceived increase in volume is actually all relative - as human-generated sounds have abated, other sounds, including birdsong, become more salient. In fact, there seems to be some evidence that, on average, birds are quieter at the moment, as they do not have to compete with the cacophony created by cars, planes and other human activities.

Either way, I know that I have been enjoying some fantastic birdsong of late. These days, I live in a 2nd floor apartment in Norwich, with a balcony that is level with the canopy of several mature trees opposite, which means that I have a good 'line of hearing' on the birds. So here is a recording from my apartment at 5am on the 24th April 2020. The dawn chorus is at this point almost at its fullest, with blackbirds and robins really singing their hearts out. But interestingly about half way through, you can also hear a tawny owl's 'kwik' call...a changing of the guard as the night shift gave way. And about 10 minutes after this, the chorus had changed again, with crows, great tits and wood pigeons taking centre stage.

It would be nice to think we can somehow retain this relative quiet once the lockdown has ended... feels to me that quite literally allowing other species to be heard again seems kind of key to addressing many of the issues for our own species...
After a 3 year hiatus perhaps we should re-awaken this shared BLOG.
I have continued to post observations and artwork in other forms - tumblr, instagram, youtube - but have neglected 'Hedgefinders' on Blogger and I miss the Natural History interactions with Adam over in Norfolk - particularly in these strange times of Covid-19 isolation. Walking the paths daily around my village and with a much quieter road outside I feel particularly attuned to the spring unfolding around us in my Somerset village. I've been finding focus and a sense of progress in a lock-down routine suddenly deprived of my daily teaching role by posting drawing films as a contribution to #isolationartschool.

Found a dead tawny owl on the back road to Glastonbury last Sunday, in remarkably good condition considering it had clearly met a sudden end on the front of a car. Had planned to mount it but, as with most taxidermy projects, 2 or 3 days passed before I went back up to the shed only to find that to my horror a rat had got to it and eaten most of it. I salvaged the wings this afternoon however and have pinned them out to dry, the cabinet from last year's quarry artwork making a rather fine drying cabinet.

The autumn marches on with the last blackberries still adorning the hedges, conkers still under the trees, the starlings begining to collect together and the last beekeeping duties coming to a seasonal conclusion with the last honey now in jars and varroa treatments applied.
Found an Elephant Moth caterpillar on the path in the garden. An amazing caterpillar, large and brilliantly marked. The caterpillar would let you turn it upside down, always flipping back uprightas I tried to draw it. When handled it withdrew it's head back into itself to inflate the eyepatch segment, perhaps to look more like a snake? Released it onto some willow-herb by the pond.

(*Birthday not actually until next week but I couldn't wait to play with it)

Set it up last night for it's first use and there was much excitement this morning with my children looking through the box. Lessons learnt - perhaps 20 micro moths escaped as I lifted other moths out of the box and I soon realised that there were also quite a number of moths sitting on the ground near to where the trap had been standing so I need to be aware of this.

Identified most of the moths but some 'brown ones' and micro moths evaded easy identification so I need to get a more comprehensive guide. Terrific names and some beautiful specimens, did a few sketches in my journal and took photos before releasing them all into the bushes. Looking forward to seeing what I can find in the coming weeks in Ilkley and Norfolk.

The tally: Perhaps 40 moths in total-including:

1 Garden Tiger
1 Swallow Prominent
4 Jersey Tiger
2 Plume Moth
1 Common Rustic
1 Canary-Shouldered Thorn
1 Dusky Thorn
2 Dark Arches
2 Large Yellow Underwing
1 Setacious Hebrew Character
1 Buff Ermine

* Note: The swifts have left us for Africa.

Its the day before I take my family into a muddy Glastonbury Festival and I'm running about collecting marquees and putting up signage for next weeks Ashcott Beerfest. However in between all this, and work, I picked up a dead wren in the lane by the Apiary and collected two bee swarms from a friend's garden. I have rehoused the bees in a hive over the road and a new one set up in my garden. Several bees seemed reluctant to enter the hive, once I'd managed to get them out of the skep, sitting in as sleepy group outside as night fell so I picked them up and put them into the top of the hive, clearly perhaps tired and hungry so gave them a little honey. The dead buzzard I found last weekend also needed dealing with so I skinned it and prepared the carcass for preservation, as I learn taxidermy. You have to be very careful not to tear the skin around the base of the tail and I shouldn't have left it a week, lesson learnt. (* Roadkill freezer already full and a lot to deal with in the coming weeks)

Stopped to pick up a dead buzzard on the A39. Not the first time as they hang in family groups above the Polden ridge and collect roadkill from the tarmac, a feeding habit with predictable risks for a large, and not particularly agile, bird. This specimen seemed unharmed by the collision that ended it's life, so perfect in-fact that I began to wonder if it might not be stunned and spring back to life inside the car. The eyes covered by the pale lower eyelids, the body still warm and limp. Larger than perhaps expected and particularly so when the wings are out, beautfuly hinging as the feathered canopy opens, splayed and stiff and ready to take to the air. The body coverlet feathers astonishingly soft, the beak and claws so sharp and hard, the beautiful rosy brown barring on the feathers. I haven't got any more room in my roadkill freezer and with the examiner visiting work and the End of Year Show coming down there hasn't been any time to draw this week but I am underway preparing this buzzard for taxidermy now.

A spring week in Normandy - a first for me, having always been in high summer. Apple blossom and flower-rich pasture in abundance. An ever present cuckoo, living up to the oldest English song, heralding summer. A dawn chorus of epic proportions. Miles of spotted orchids clustered in the hedgerow banks all around; maybe less pesticide use, maybe just less intensive use of land?
Raining today but really warm. Sitting at football in a T-shirt but trying to sketch an armadillo skeleton for my book plans whilst avoiding heavy raindrops. The badger set still is still enticing me, in the woods on the walk along the lane, but I have yet to see the badgers that my son saw a couple of weeks ago and I plan to stake out the set one evening next week to try to get some photographs. The wet warm weather has bought out the snails, there are gangs of them (* collective noun for snails - a 'slime' 'shell' ?) in the gardens on School hill, writhing groups all enjoying the security of the wet leaves, cloudy sky and humid air - still evolutionarily linked to the water of the distant sea from where these now earthbound molluscs once crawled. They are actually very beautiful and, even in large groups, surprisingly invisible with their mottled shells and careful considered movements. As a boy I used to collect them, no surprise there, and the smell of damp leaves or lettuce still reminds me of my buckets of snails in the shed. They frequently escaped, as did my cockroaches, and I recall the trouble caused at my father's work in hospital when they got out in his office having been bought in for me by his secretary.

Family walk along the beach at Sheringham in north Norfolk. A beautiful landscape of pines, bright spring light and flint stone walls. Explored Sheringham park and then along the sea front, throwing stones into the calm sea and looking for porpoise bones scattered amongst the large pebbles. The small crab pot fishing fleet hauled up on their cables, fading stickers to record fish species sizes and then chips on the way home.

Familiar circular walk around Claxton, along Spong lane, pooh stick bridge and around Carlton church and back past the horses. Bright spring sunshine, the skylarks and rooks of Norfolk, children charging about and adults in conversation.

My eyes to the ground looking for evidence of the animal lives lived and lost in this landscape of my wife's childhood. A tawny owl skull and feathers in the hedge bank of Folly lane, a rather sad and now scattered carcass, perhaps a victim of an unfortunate meeting with a vehicle. Then a lone stoat skull in the dried oak and pine twigs at the side of the graveyard under the hedge, evidence perhaps of a fight to the death with another stoat, there are few animals that can best this tough little hedgerow assassin with it's impressive incisors. I picked up a hare skull on the top field earlier in the week, notably larger than the rabbit skulls usually seen, the hares and ever present feature of this part of the country although not many seen this week, leggy and bounding in the distance as in a Rob Barnes linocut.

Friday 05th February 2016 - Much earlier than the last two years and no surprise after this mild winter. They have been croaking away through the night since 5th January, clearly audible between the sounds of wind and passing traffic, low and persistent before being replaced by the busy flutterings of sparrows under the roof-tiles as the sun comes up ! Then there was disruption by the the brief hard frost two weeks ago that seemed to dampen their ardour, then numbers building up in recent days, 11 at last count, with two seen 'piggy-backing' on the path as the children went to school yesterday and then the first actual frogspawn seen by my daughter Alice this afternoon.
Beautiful winter morning and although its probably the coldest week so far there is clearly more light earlier and later in the day and the air has a clarity as it sheds the gloomy light of November and December. Ice on the pond and on the leaf filled paddling pool and the children are happy inside in-front of a morning weekend fire. Woken this morning by the sparrows that live in our roof, stamping and fluttering about and chirping, so full of character and energy. I don't really know what they're doing in the loft as it's in a rather inaccessible corner and I rather like their presence but I fear they're making inroads into the space, perhaps they're building things, is it too early for nesting ? As predicted the cold has disrupted the early over amorous frogs, seen in the pond a couple of weeks ago but I'm sure the cold won't last and the spring will be upon us soon. Enjoying the cold cycle to work each day, into the rising sun, low over the hedges and farms, the steaming cows and lines of starlings collecting along the telegraph wires as they coordinate their day's activities after a night in the reeds. On the other side of the world friends Facebook from the end of summer in New Zealand and the T-shirt wearing weather in the Falklands.

A wonderful walk at Covehithe on the gravel beach that separates the sea from the salt marsh and the flocks of seagulls wheeling in the low winter sun. The beach littered with sea-worn masonry, plant bulbs and uprooted trees torn from the cliff tops as the coast is remorselessly eaten away by the tides. A beautiful stretch of raw Norfolk coast, with the small village at ongoing peril and just along the coast from the teashops of Southwold.

'At Covehithe, on the Suffolk coast, there has been the greatest loss of land. In 1887 sixty feet was claimed by the sea, and in ten years (1878-87) the loss was at the rate of over eighteen feet a year. In 1895 another heavy loss occurred between Southwold and Covehithe and a new cove formed.'

Wonderful walks around Claxton and Strumpshaw, opposite sides of the Yare river but in so many ways different landscapes and of course for me with different family associations. The hedgerows are uncharacteristically alive, with daffodils actually blooming in this most strange of winters and the birds are louder that unusual, territorial and confused blackbirds blurting out of the bushes. The greenery is reassuringly flattened by wind and rain and the dried stems of cow-parsley stand beautifully silhouetted against the sky along the damp lanes, wet tarmac shining white in the low winter sun.
My solid ground, their purview, my perspective partial. Is their rhythm in their influx, cause and effect that were I to look long enough I would perceive? I know the shape of things; the first opening chapters of aggregation, the caesuric interlude, the third phase of swirling, screaming biomass, the final act of downrush then all dusky, chattered coda. But tonight, as ever, I doubt the completion of the story; tonight my fears say the narrative will be broken. I have ruined it with my clumsy stroll up the platform; I have come too late, gone too early, been an interloper. Exiled, I should not have come here.

But I cannot break this, nor yet can I impose sense on it, just be in it once again, now in sound, now in crepuscular drizzle. To see all would be to be wise of the sense of it, but to not see it does not mean there is none. Let it be. Let it always be. And breathe.Adam Nobodaddyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09735751781376509326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2423093043023594964.post-67814614752206434352015-11-11T05:22:00.002+00:002015-11-11T05:22:39.615+00:00Lost and Found Exhibition'Lost and Found' exhibition opened in Bath earlier tonight and I spent a terrific evening talking to interesting people about ideas, memory, collecting, totems and other things. Also talked about the collection of found specimens and the difficulties of their preservation and display, always great to talk to new people about ideas and I drove home trying to clarify what I am doing with my artwork, useful to draw a line sometimes and reflect. Thanks to everyone who came along and if you find yourself in or near Bath then please come and have a look. 44AD Gallery is just next to the Cathedral in the centre of town and the show is free and open until 4pm this Sunday.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS";">Exploring this
excavated landscape has for me been an exploration of the re-colonisation of
this once industrial and now strangely lawless place. The exposed geology, and
scattered remnants of man’s presence, in what is now a theatre for new
activities and a sheltered refuge for emergent creatures and plants. The bones
at the bottom of the cliff faces evidence of the sharp invasion of the wooded land,
the sudden-ness of the missing earth. The tracks in the mud, the rusting
artefacts, the plants reclaiming the beds of gravel and the echoing calls of
the nesting crows and kestrels in this sunken lost world. I wander as a
traveller looking for evidence of these stories, taking the emotional and
biological temperature of this enclosed otherworld. Using the conventions of
exploration and collection I mount miniature expeditions, over night camps and
order and frame my finds with aesthetic taxonomy in an attempt to capture
something of this place of echoes, both literal and metaphorical.

A terrific day at Ashcott Village Harvest Fair manning the 'What's in an owl pellet - free stall' the children, and a surprising number of parents, really enjoy it once they learn it's owl pellets not owl poo. Many of the children enjoy the rubber gloves, hand jell and tweezers as much as the pellets, CSI Ashcott, but they all get amazingly good at identifying the bones. 'Is that a vole tibia, no no thats a mouse pelvis'. Great to see the young naturalists coming back to collect there beautifully arranged boards of glued bones later in the afternoon.

As I stood in the sunshine looking at the skies it is now also clear that we have lost the swallows for another year. The swifts left a month ago and now only the house martins remain, cutting their playful paths through the autumn insects and the less crowded and quieter airspace.
